  4.     DIED. Richard Overholt, 88, chest surgeon and pioneer in the
  5. U.S. antismoking crusade; in Boston. In the early 1930s, while
  6. operating on tuberculosis patients, Overholt noticed that the
  7. lungs of nonsmokers recovered faster than those of smokers.
  8. When he shared his finding with other doctors in 1934, Overholt
  9. recalled, "They thought I was crazy. I could see so much
  10. evidence, and no one would listen."
